  1. Blimp1 as a sebaceous gland stem cell marker; Crosstalk with TGF-beta signal

It has recently been reported that Blimp1 is a functional stem cell marker for sebaceous glands. Blimp1 suppresses the transcription level of c-Myc, thereby inducing the quiescence of stem cells (Cell. 2006;126:597-609.). It is possible that TGF-beta signaling pathway is associated with Blimp1, leading to maintain the stemness of sebaceous gland cells.
However, I failed to demonstrate the heterogeneity of Blimp1 expression in the xenograft/ organoid formation as well as in three-dimensional (3D) culture of SZ95 cells, one of the immortalized sebaceous gland cells. Instead, there was the heterogeneity in the expression of Wnt/beta-catenin signal activity only after 3D culture, but not in 2D culture (Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2013 Sep 6;438(4):640-6.).
